John joined Rice, Sullivan & Co. in 1980. As a Principal, he is the firm’s treasurer and secretary. John is also responsible for the firm’s peer review process. Beyond his leadership roles, he serves as a trusted advisor to individuals, businesses and nonprofit entities. John provides personal and business tax planning and preparation services. He also assists with compilation and review engagements.

John began his accounting career with Rice, Sullivan & Co. shortly after obtaining his Bachelor’s degree from McKendree College. Throughout his tenure with the firm, he has provided invaluable insight to clients through his tax and accounting expertise and service. For instance, John currently serves on the board of directors for one of the firm’s largest clients.

John decided to pursue an accounting career while in high school. He enjoyed the fact that accounting is such a detail oriented profession. In addition, John has always enjoyed working with numbers. Throughout his career, he has attributed his professional progression to his excellent attention to detail, his perfectionist approach to work and his ability to listen and make clients feel at ease. John also credits his parents for instilling in him the value of hard work. He frequently references the Rotary 4-Way Test (1. Is it the truth? 2. Is it fair to all concerned? 3. Will it build goodwill and better friendships? 4. Will it be beneficial to all concerned?) as guidelines to how he approaches choices he makes in his professional and personal life.

John is actively involved in the local community and his church. More specifically, he previously served as a trustee for 13 years and currently serves as chair of the finance committee for St. George Catholic Church. John has also been a volunteer firefighter in New Baden for over 26 years and is actively involved with the local Knights of Columbus Council.

John was born in Breese, Illinois and currently resides in New Baden with his wife and two children. Outside of the office, he enjoys gardening.
